The port of Split is one of the top destinations in Croatia for embarking on an unforgettable sailing adventure, providing a central location and easy access to one of the country’s top attractions, Diocletian’s Palace, with roots dating to the late 3rd century AD. Trogir’s marina is a good alternative with easy access to Split International Airport. No matter where you begin, you won’t want to miss exploring the historic center of Split, nearly half of which is covered by the vast palace complex, home to some of the most well-preserved Roman architecture in the world. St. Dominus Cathedral is a standout, built as a mausoleum for Roman Emperor Diocletian, who was interred here in 311 AD. From its Romanesque bell tower, constructed between the 13th and 16th centuries, you can take in a view over the historic rooftops and beyond.

The Riva seafront promenade is lovely for a stroll, great people watching, and fjaka, the art of doing nothing but enjoying the moment.

Depart for Sibenik’s Marina Mandalina, widely regarded as the area’s best port for yachts with modern facilities and one of the Adriatic’s safest berthing locations. It also happens to be conveniently located near the entrance of the Krka River and Krka National Park. The park is truly a must-explore with its scenic paths showcasing the vibrant blue-green waters of the river, Skradinski Buk (a series of 17 waterfalls spilling 2,625 feet), lush greenery, and restored windmills. 

The historic town of Sibenik itself dates back more than a thousand years and is home to four fortresses and the iconic St. James Cathedral. A Gothic masterpiece, this UNESCO World Heritage Site features a frieze with over 70 sculpted faces of men, women, and children, and served as the House of Black and White in the hit series “Game of Thrones.” 

Continuing to Zadar in the northern Dalmatian region, Marina Zadar is well-equipped for a variety of yacht sizes while offering convenient access to the top attractions in the city, located at its heart. It also boasts a number of intriguing historical sites with a past dating back some 3,000 years. Explore the 16th-century defensive walls, marvel at the Roman-era forum, and numerous buildings that date to the 8th century. There are also popular modern attractions like the Sea Organ art installation along the waterfront that makes music using the power of the waves, providing a unique soundtrack exclusive to the city.

A day trip to explore Plitvice National Park is one of the top things to do, with its famous waterfalls and lakes just a 90-minute drive away. This UNESCO World Heritage Site can be explored via scenic footpaths, a boat ride, and an electric “train,” featuring 100 beautiful cascades laced between 16 lakes in brilliant shades ranging from turquoise to emerald.

Cruise on to the island of Losinj in the Kvarner Gulf, nestled between the Istrian Peninsula and the northern Croatian mainland. It’s long been known as the “Island of Vitality” thanks to its fresh salty sea air, abundant sunshine, pine and eucalyptus trees, along with many aromatic plants, including wild herbs like lavender, rosemary, and sage. Enjoy many of them at the Fragrant Island Garden, featuring more than 250 plant species, and perhaps take a stroll on the forest trails in Cikat Forest Park, some of which lead to idyllic beaches for swimming. While it’s possible to spot dolphins from shore, taking a dolphin-watching boat trip brings the best chance to see the bottlenose dolphins that often make an appearance in the area. Diving enthusiasts won’t want to miss the Losinj historical underwater park, with artifacts and replicas submerged in the sea.

Those interested in history will find plenty on Losinj too. Mali Losinj is home to a mix of historical villages that include Austro-Hungarian-era buildings. Fritzi Palace now serves as a museum focused on the island’s history and cultural heritage. In Veli Losinj, enjoy a scenic view of the surrounding area from the 15th-century Venetian tower of Veli Lošinj.

Anchor at ACI Marina Rab in the town of Rab, which provides a great base for exploring and an extensive range of amenities. Rab Town has a history spanning more than 2,000 years, inhabited by the Illyrians before becoming a Roman settlement around the 1st century BC. There are many historic charms to discover from its past, including the Town Loggia, the 11th-century Monastery of St. Euphemia, and historic churches with bell towers like St. Mary’s and St. Christopher’s, which has an observation deck for panoramic views. 

Simply strolling through Old Town Rab is a delight with its medieval architecture and artists who come to create and display their works. Be sure to stop along the way to try a slice of Rab cake (Rapska torta). Its recipe was invented by local nuns in the 12th century, specifically for visiting Pope Alexander III, and it continues to be enjoyed today.

Continue your journey to Krk, the largest island in the Adriatic at 157 square miles. Marina Punat is generally most convenient and the best for yachts as one of the Adriatic’s most well-protected bays. If you’re ready to relax on an idyllic beach, Veli plaza is a great choice in the resort town of Baska, stretching for more than 1.5 miles while also providing opportunities to swim, kayak, or paddleboard. Krk Town, the largest settlement, is ideal for sightseers, home to the 12th-century Frankopan Castle overlooking the sea. The city walls, a fine example of medieval fortifications with gates and towers, encircle the historic center while providing views of the picturesque surrounds. 

For insight into Krk’s past, visit the city’s museum, the Krk Island Maritime Heritage Interpretation Centre, which focuses on the island’s seafaring traditions from antiquity to the mid-20th century. For a unique underground experience, visit Biserujka Cave to marvel at its glittering stalactites and stalagmites. Located near the village of Rudine, guided tours are available.

Marina Admiral Opatija provides the best base for exploring Opatija’s historic center as the only marina for yachts directly within the town. This is the perfect spot for the final day of this memorable sailing itinerary, with the chance to stroll the Croatian Walk of Fame, similar to the one in Hollywood but featuring legends from Croatia such as inventor Nikola Tesla and basketball player Drazen Petrovic. You can also enjoy a walk on the promenade to take in views of the Kvarner Gulf and nearby islands on one side, and magnificent historic mansions on the other. That includes landmarks like Villa Angiolina and its lovely surrounding park, and the statue of the Girl with the Seagull. Stretching for 7.5 miles, if you’re up for a trek, you can walk it all the way to Volosko. Once there, you’ll find many restaurants serving fresh fish and seafood. 

One of the best ways to end your trip is to relax in one of the wellness spas. Opatija is a 19th-century wellness resort town that once attracted European royalty, and today it continues to be a top spa destination with numerous spas offering pampering treatments, saunas, and indoor and outdoor pools.
