Inside MedEX: The Helicopter-Ready Explorer Yacht Built for Mediterranean
Meet The MedEX super yacht: Long-range capability, open-air living, and yes, it can even land a helicopter.
Canadian studio ER Yacht Design has presented its newest concept, the MedEX. A 131’ (40m) yacht concept that challenges the traditional notion of what an explorer yacht can be. Rather than focusing solely on remote expeditions, this design is purpose-built for Mediterranean cruising.
Combining explorer capability, with an open-air lifestyle associated with luxury yachting. The name itself hints at its dual personality: “Med” for cruising grounds and “Ex” for explorer, promising adventure and luxury living wrapped up into one platform.
Designed With The Mediterranean In Mind
At the core of the concept is what the yacht design studio describes as “effortless outdoor living.” Vast deck spaces are arranged to blur the boundary between interior and exterior spaces, creating a continuous flow. Flexible zones allow owners to customize areas for sunbathing, socializing, dining, adventure, or relaxation depending on preferences.
The elongated upper deck is particularly flexible, shifting from an all-day sundeck to an alfresco dining lounge. Below, a generous beach club space will connect guests to the sea, complemented by storage for tenders and toys, as well as a Jacuzzi.
Refined Explorer Capability
Although MedEx is set to embrace the Mediterranean chic lifestyle, its design DNA remains rooted in the explorer realm. A high bow, purposeful lines, and aluminum hull points to its strength and seaworthiness, while the 6.6’ (2m) draft opens access to anchorages that other yachts can’t reach. This “shallow-draft freedom” is key to the concept’s appeal for those who want to explore the region’s secluded bays and smaller ports.
Performance has also been considered, with a projected 5,500 nautical range at 10.5 knots, supported by zero-speed stabilizers for extra comfort.
Owner-Centric Layouts
Accommodation is penciled in for 10 guests across five cabins, supported by a 10-person crew for a one-to-one ratio, again emphasizing the luxury lifestyle elements through dedicated service.
The owner’s suite occupies a prime position aft on the bridge deck, benefitting from privacy, dedicated access, and proximity to an optional certified helicopter landing place. Four additional guest cabins have been positioned on the main deck.
Forward-Thinking Features
One of MedEx’s most alluring and notable features of a yacht concept of this size is the ability to integrate a fully certified helicopter landing area. For a 131’ platform, this is an ambitious addition that significantly expands the yacht’s potential operational flexibility.
MedEX arrived shortly after ER Yacht Design revealed its bold 200’ (61m) Logos concept, known for its ultra-modern profile designed to appear in constant motion. With extensive glazing and angular lines that shift with the light, this concept showcased the studio’s futuristic direction. The MedEx yacht concept continues channeling this, and a more lifestyle-focused explorer format.
Explore The Med
MedEx is proving explorer yachts no longer have to choose between rugged capability and refined leisure—no matter where they operate. The shallow draft, adaptable deck spacks, and Mediterranean-focused philosophy highlight a new flurry of activity in the exciting explorer space ahead.
