Yacht Charter Destination Dupe: Trade The BVIs For The Grenadines Laid-Back Luxury

The Caribbean chain where laid-back living, untouched nature, and yachting await.

The British Virgin Islands (BVI) have long earned their place as one of the Caribbean’s perennial favorites for yacht charter, and it’s easy to see why. The islands are close together, the sailing is straightforward, the anchorages are idyllic, and the charter scene is among the most established in the world. For first-timers, the BVI offers a reassuringly smooth introduction to life onboard.

But if you have already cruised the classic route, or are looking for quieter anchorages and a sense of being off the beaten path, then you should really think about heading further south to the Grenadines. A chain of islands and cays stretching around 60 miles between St Vincent and Grenada, the Grenadines offer everything that draws people into the BVI — turquoise waters, postcard-perfect beaches and easy island-hopping — but with a more untouched, more adventurous vibe.

Rather than the familiar Tortola, Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke, a yacht charter in the Grenadines can take you to the characterful Bequia, exclusive Mustique, laid-back Canouan and the inhabited islands of Tobago Cays. The islands are more intimate, more relaxed, and for many, they capture the ideal version of the true Caribbean.

Here are the reasons the Grenadines deserve a spot on your Caribbean yacht charter itinerary this winter:

Embrace Slow Island Hopping

One of the biggest draws of the Grenadines is the freedom to take it easy; there is no rush to tick off a checklist of ‘must-visit’ charter spots. Instead, the island chain lets you take each day as it comes. With over 30 islands and cays in the chain, each has its own distinctive character, which keeps a yacht charter itinerary varied.

While the BVI are famously compact, with only short hops between neighboring islands, this means popular anchorages and routes can get overcrowded in peak season. The Grenadines stretch things out enough that distances are comfortable, but with plenty of choice, you can easily avoid the crowds. The open ocean passages between the islands, versus the protected BVI Sir Francis Drake Channel, also add an exciting touch to itineraries and a chance to experience some bluewater sailing.

Find A Different Kind Of Caribbean Glamour

On a yacht charter, Caribbean glamour can come in many forms, and in the Grenadines, it takes an understated one — particularly on the island of Mustique. This private island has long been associated with sophistication. The appeal here is less about the BVI floating party spots and beach clubs but more about privacy, discretion, and a laid-back atmosphere. Mustique is renowned for attracting high-profile visitors, but the vibe is still very much barefoot and unhurried luxe.

Spend the day here hopping between beautiful beaches and exclusive villa hunting using the famous Mustique Mules —a luxurious golf cart-style vehicle. Or, for something a little different, visit the island’s equestrian center for horseback riding. The island also has a premier wellness hub, the Cotton House Spa, perfect for enjoying some downtime. Come evening, head to Basil’s Bar, the island’s legendary waterfront institution. Built over the water, it’s the kind of place where the rum flows paired with live music and offers unpolished glamour.

Make The Tobago Cays Your Playground

Perhaps one of the biggest reasons to cruise here over the BVI is the Tobago Cays. This is the Grenadines’ crown jewel and, for many, the highlight of any yacht charter itinerary here. The Tobago Cays Marine Park protects a small cluster of uninhabited islands and reefs, forming a natural playground of clear, shallow water.

Here, the days can unfold as you wish onboard, but snorkeling the vibrant reefs among the sea turtles, or paddling across the sheltered shallows on a kayak or stand-up paddleboard, is naturally the main activity. Take the tender to tiny, powder-soft sand beaches that you will likely have to yourself. The flat, calm conditions are also ideal for watersports here, so the yacht’s toy box will get plenty of use.

With minimal development, the focus when cruising here is on nature; there are no towering resorts or infrastructure ashore, so it’s the kind of untouched setting that is increasingly rare in the Caribbean.

Explore Diverse Island Character

The Grenadines offer an extreme variety of character from one island to the next, and the islands have preserved their local heritage. You won’t find large hotel chains or commercialized cruise ports, but you will find a genuine taste of West Indian life.

With so many islands to choose from in a one-charter itinerary, you can easily move between these completely different islands, and Bequia is the perfect introduction. The largest inhabited island and long known for its tradition of boatbuilding and fishing, Port Elizabeth is a good place to start; explore it and stroll along the colorful waterfront.

Further south, tiny Mayreau provides an even quieter experience, with just one main village; it is worlds away from the busy BVI. Walk up to the hilltop church for views across the surrounding islands or spend the day anchored in Saltwhistle Bay.

Then head to Mustique for a dose of discreet luxury. While development and infrastructure are limited throughout the chain, Canouan is one island with a luxury resort offering. From there, the itinerary can continue to Tobago Cays, where nature takes center stage. Together, the islands make for a diverse yacht charter itinerary, letting you experience local island life, understated glamour, secluded beaches, and uninhabited landscapes.

Dine Slowly, Locally & Barefoot

Dining in the Grenadines is as relaxed as everything else. One of the most authentic ways to experience the Grenadines dining scene is its incredibly fresh seafood shacks, and in the Tobago Cays the beachfront lobster barbecues are certainly ones to add to your itinerary.

The BVI has become famous for its lively beach bars and social atmosphere, but the Grenadines offer a more low-key approach to eating and drinking by the water. In the Tobago Cays, the experience is wonderfully simple. Your captain can arrange a lobster barbecue on the beach where you can dine with your feet in the sand, surrounded by nothing but the sea and the islands. On other islands, small waterfront restaurants serve freshly caught seafood and traditional Caribbean dishes without the formality of a resort dining room.

There is also the option to make dinner onboard part of the experience. Ask the chef to prepare local seafood, pick up ingredients during a shore excursion, and enjoy dinner on deck as the sun sets.

Dupe Decisions: The BVI vs. The Grenadines

Whether you choose to charter in the BVI or the Grenadines comes down to the kind of experience you have in mind. If you want things easy and a well-established charter scene, then the BVI are popular for a reason. But if you are after variety and a quieter sense of adventure, the Grenadines should be your top pick.

Both island chains deliver the essentials of a Caribbean yacht charter: warm turquoise waters, beautiful beaches, excellent watersport opportunities, and the freedom to take each day as it comes.

While the BVI have a polished, easy-going appeal, the Grenadines offer a slower pace, fewer crowds, and a true sense of getting away from it all. For those who have already ticked off a classic BVI itinerary, or want to discover a less familiar side to the Caribbean islands, the Grenadines could be the destination dupe worth trying this winter.
