More Superyachts Are Heading To Alaska This Summer — Here’s Why

The Mediterranean season has long been the undisputed hotspot of summer yacht charters. But this year, a different destination is attracting some of the world’s largest superyachts.

Alaska is welcoming more high-profile superyachts than ever before, as charterers and owners have a growing appetite for more immersive, nature-driven experiences over traditional cruising hotspots.

While the northern US state — hailed as the Last Frontier — has long been a seasonal favorite for adventurous yachts, the number of vessels over 60 meters arriving this summer suggests the trend is gathering momentum.

The Fleet Heading North

Among the visitors this summer is the 118-meter Launchpad, accompanied by its 80-meter support vessel Wingman. After departing Seattle in late May, both yachts arrived in Juneau’s Auke Bay before beginning their exploration of Southeast Alaska. Juneau has increasingly become a key gateway for superyachts heading north or south through Alaska’s spectacular coastline.

Other notable superyachts cruising the region this season include the 88.4-meter Zen, the 72.5-meter Q (formerly Ragnar), and the 62-meter Sea Owl. Returning favorites such as the 58.2-meter Unbridled also continue to make Alaska part of their annual cruising itinerary.

It’s not just the private superyachts making this journey to the Last Frontier; luxury small-ship cruise operations, including the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, are also embracing Alaskan itineraries. The Ritz-Carlton’s newest superyacht, Luminara, is sailing the region with various itineraries to choose from.

Why Go Beyond The Med

The Mediterranean remains the heart of the global yacht charter scene, but changing travel preferences are prompting more people to look further afield, and typically to more remote destinations. This summer, some parts of the western Mediterranean have seen softer demand, with brokers reporting fewer bookings and a rise in last-minute charters.

At the same time, experiential travel specialists are seeing growing interest in destinations that prioritize wildlife, exploration and privacy. For many yacht guests, Alaska delivers exactly that.

An Exceptional Cruising Ground

An Alaskan yacht charter itinerary offers experiences that few cruising grounds can match. Charterers can enjoy front-row seats to breaching whales, spot bears along coastlines and cruise under vast glaciers. With dramatic landscapes at every turn and few yachts in sight given the vastness, Alaska feels worlds away from the traditional yachting destinations. 

Alongside time on the water, Alaskan itineraries can include helicopter flights over icefields, floatplane excursions into remote backcountry, guided hikes, world-class fishing and even dogsledding adventures depending on the season.

Glacier Bay National Park is one of the region’s true highlights, where guests can cruise among ancient glaciers and dramatic scenery, although access is strictly controlled through a permit system to help preserve its untouched environment.

Further south, Tracy Arm offers one of the state’s most dramatic fjord experiences, with towering granite cliffs, waterfalls and snow-covered peaks leading to the spectacular Sawyer Glaciers. Between wilderness adventures, stops at coastal communities such as Hoonah offer guests the chance to experience Alaskan culture.
