Ocean Explorer 88: Steeler Yachts Just Raised The Bar For Explorer Charters

Those searching for a yacht that can take them well beyond the usual cruising grounds have a new option to watch. Dutch shipyard Steeler Yachts has unveiled the Ocean Explorer 88, a 26.7-meter tri-deck expedition yacht that becomes the flagship of its Ocean Explorer series, joining the 67, 72 and 85 models.

A Bigger, Bolder Explorer Platform

At 88 ’, this Ocean Explorer is only slightly longer than the Ocean Explorer 85. But Steeler says the new model represents a significant step up in volume, functionality, and onboard living space.

The entirely new tri-deck layout creates room for a dedicated bridge deck, expanded crew and service areas, and a separate spa and wellness area. For those chartering, that means more space to relax between adventures without compromising the yacht’s expedition capabilities.

The additional volume also has a practical purpose. There is increased storage for provisions and expedition equipment, while a dedicated work deck aft of the bridge can accommodate two tenders. This translates into greater freedom to carry the equipment needed for longer, more remote adventures.

Designed Around Life On Board

The new model has been developed with Dutch designer Pim Dijksman, retaining the rugged character of the Ocean Explorer range through its round-bilged steel displacement hull and aluminum superstructure.

Inside, the layout has been carefully considered to separate guest spaces from the yacht’s operational areas. On the main deck, a U-shaped aft seating area provides a relaxed setting for outdoor dining and socializing, while a separate service galley and dedicated crew routes allow the team to work discreetly behind the scenes.

Above, the upper deck houses a dedicated spa and wellness area behind the wheelhouse — an inviting retreat after a day spent diving, hiking or exploring ashore. The sundeck provides another natural gathering point, with an alfresco dining area, sun lounge and bar designed for long afternoons at anchor and sunset drinks.

Accommodation For Eight

The Ocean Explorer 88 accommodates up to eight guests across four cabins, with a layout that balances shared spaces and privacy. The full-beam owner’s suite is positioned on the main deck, while the lower deck houses a VIP cabin and two double cabins. Crew accommodation for four is also located separately on the lower deck, while the captain has a dedicated cabin close to the bridge.

That separation extends to the yacht’s circulation. Steeler says the increased beam has made it possible to create distinct passageways and entrances for guests and crew — a detail that may go largely unnoticed by charterers, but helps create a more private and seamless experience on board.

Built To Go Further

The Ocean Explorer 88 is designed for the kind of cruising where distance matters. The MAN engines are expected to give the yacht a range of 5,000+ nautical miles, opening up the possibility of extended voyages and remote itineraries without frequent refueling stops.

For charter itineraries, this kind of range means reaching destinations far beyond the standard cruising circuit. From Arctic fjords and remote Pacific islands to longer passages between the Mediterranean and Caribbean. The yacht will also be built to RINA Pleasure Yacht classification, which reinforces its credentials as a capable long-range explorer.

A New Flagship For Steeler

Steeler Yachts CEO Yorrith Joosten described the Ocean Explorer 88 as a significant step in strengthening the yard’s position in the explorer market. The model has been made possible in part by Steeler’s new facility in Meppel, which has allowed the shipyard to expand its production capabilities.

The unveiling also comes as demand for the existing Ocean Explorer range continues. Steeler recently confirmed the sale of a third Ocean Explorer 85, which is currently under construction and scheduled for delivery in 2027.

For charterers, the Ocean Explorer 88 points to an increasingly compelling evolution in the explorer-yacht market: those that offer the range and rugged capability needed to venture farther, without sacrificing the comfort and wellness spaces expected of a modern luxury charter yacht.
