This 639′ Superyacht Has A Mission Bigger Than Its Size — And That Is To Protect Our Oceans
Record-breaking REV Ocean lays out its plan for its first scientific missions, marking the start of an ambitious global marine research program.
For years, REV Ocean has been one of the most talked-about projects in yachting — not only for its extraordinary scale but also for its ambitious purpose. Most recently, the 639′ (195m) has presented the details of its first scientific programs, highlighting how it intends to reshape our understanding of the oceans.
The REV Ocean initiative story began in 2017 when it first introduced its mission to protect and restore the world’s oceans through science, innovation, and collaboration. While anticipation has largely focused on its “world’s largest superyacht” title, impressive dimensions, and cutting-edge design, this latest announcement offers a clear picture of how the yacht will fulfill its initial vision. The superyacht is scheduled to be officially launched in Brazil next year — alongside the UN Ocean Decade Conference in Rio — before kick-starting a changemaking 18-month research program.
A Superyacht Like No Other
Penned by Espen Oino, with interiors by H2 Yacht Design, REV Ocean combines the luxurious features and engineering of a superyacht with the capabilities of a sophisticated research platform. Onboard facilities rival those of dedicated scientific ships, including submarine hangars, advanced laboratories, a 3D printing facility, and an onboard metal workshop. Documentary crews are also expected to join expeditions.
Rather than simply a data collection platform, REV Ocean has been designed as a collaborative floating research platform where scientists, engineers, and conservation experts work together onboard to tackle some of the ocean’s biggest challenges.
First Missions Announced
Over the first 18 months, REV Ocean will undertake ten research expeditions focused on deep-sea ecosystems, blue carbon habitats and marine biodiversity. The findings from these aim to support global conservation initiatives, including efforts to protect 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030.
The first expedition will explore Brazil’s Vitoria-Trindade Chain—an underwater mountain range regarded as one of the world’s most scientifically significant marine environments. Scientists will study its unique ecosystems while improving understanding of how these remote habitats contribute to ocean health. The program is then set to continue into the Caribbean Biodiversity Corridor, a multinational conservation initiative involving Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic. Here, researchers will investigate underwater landscapes and marine biodiversity across one of the more ecologically important areas.

Discovery To Action
What sets REV Ocean apart is how science will drive action and what happens at the end of each expedition. Every research mission will be followed by a week-long port convening that brings together scientists, policymakers, conservation organizations, investors, and other stakeholders.
The goal is to dramatically shorten the typical delay between the scientific evidence and meaningful policy, ensuring that discoveries have a faster route to real-world conservation outcomes.
A New Model For Superyacht Philanthropy
In an unusual funding approach, 25% of REV Ocean’s operational schedule will be available for charter through Burgess. Revenue generated from these exclusive charters will help fund the yacht’s philanthropic activities and ongoing scientific program, creating a self-sustaining model.
For charter clients, the experience offers more than access to one of the world’s most impressive yachts; it provides an opportunity to support future ocean research and conservation directly.
Could REV Ocean Redefine Yachting?
Purpose-led yachting is becoming an increasingly important conversation across the industry, but REV Ocean is taking that concept to an entirely different scale. Rather than treating sustainability as an onboard feature or operational consideration, the yacht has been built around science from the outset.
As it prepares to begin its first global expedition, REV Ocean is offering something few yachts ever can: a blueprint for how private investment, luxury experiences and world-class exploration can work together to create lasting impact. And this lasting legacy may be measured not just by scale but by its contribution to our oceans’ future.
