Yacht Charter vs. Luxury Resort: Which Costs More for a Weeklong Vacation?

If you thought yacht charters couldn’t match premium resorts in affordability, think again! Here’s how the two ultra-luxe experiences compare.

Comparing a high-end resort stay to a private yacht charter may feel like comparing apples and oranges. Pricewise, most people would assume resorts are infinitely cheaper, right? After all, yachts are associated with billionaire celebrities, maximum privacy, and peak luxury. Yet when Yacht.com crunched the numbers, the two seemingly different experiences proved far more similar than you might think.

After completing more than 1,000 yacht charter mock bookings and 1,500 curated premium resort mock bookings, crewed charters were only 11.4% more than a one-week resort vacation for a party of eight. Breaking down prices by nightly rate per person scores you an even sweeter deal. For eight guests, each person will pay an average of $761 per night for a high-end resort and $847 per night for a private yacht charter — that’s a mere $86 difference!

So, if you thought your own exclusive getaway on the water would never be in the cards, think again. Let’s dive into where a one-week yacht vacation could be the better option for your next luxury retreat.

Key Findings

Yachts and Luxury Resorts Can Cost Nearly the Same

Feeling hesitant about the heading? Rest assured, this is not a joke! When examining total pricing (including taxes and fees) for a one-week vacation for a group of eight, private crewed yacht charters and premium resorts were relatively on par. After analyzing two separate booking dates in November 2026 and May 2027, the average price of a resort stay was $42,602; the average price of a yacht charter was $47,460 — a $4,858 difference.

Examining median total costs lessens this gap even more, with charters costing $42,277 and resorts costing $38,105. On average, yacht charters in the world’s most idyllic locations are only 11.4% more than luxury resorts in the same destinations.

When broken down into total nightly rates and total nightly rates per person, the picture shifts favorably towards yachts. For a group of eight, a one-week charter averages $6,780 per night; a one-week, eight-person luxury resort stay averages $6,086 per night. And per person? Private charters cost $847 a night, and premium resorts cost $761 a night.

At only $86 more per person each night, a crewed yacht charter just might be the better choice for your next high-end holiday.

Where a Yacht Vacation Offers the Best Bang For Your Buck

Global map comparing the average cost of a one-week yacht charter vs. resort vacation for eight people by region.

Now that you know the price of a private crewed yacht charter holds its own against an ultra-luxe resort vacation, you’re probably wondering, “Where?” We selected 11 hotspots around the globe best known for world-class accommodations — both on land and by sea — to examine how their resort and yacht offerings compare. The study includes:

Perhaps the most surprising finding is that a weeklong yacht charter for eight people in Thailand costs, on average, 40% less than a luxury resort stay. In fact, Thailand is the cheapest yachting destination in the analysis, with charters averaging $28,848 / week. For reference, the average premium resort in Thailand costs $48,317 / week.

The two other cheapest private yacht charter locations are Croatia and France. Additionally, France is the most comparable destination pricewise, with the median crewed yacht charter costing just 0.9% more than a one-week luxury resort stay for eight people.

And the type of yacht you choose to charter can dramatically lower the weekly total for your group. The cheapest charters are crewed sailing yachts in the Virgin Islands, averaging $26,400 for one week.

Motor yachts cost a pretty penny in comparison, with Croatia being the most affordable location to charter one, at $45,799 per week. Funny enough, Croatia is also home to the overall most affordable yacht in the study, with a gulet (motor sailer) costing as little as $6,611 / week.

The Least and Most Expensive Luxury Destinations

We know that Thailand, France, and Croatia will score you the best bang for your buck if your group of eight is chartering a yacht for a week, but which resort destinations are the most affordable? The three cheapest luxury resort locations from the analysis are Australia, Croatia, and Greece, with Croatia being the best deal. On average, eight guests will pay $19,211 total for the week.

Conversely, Australia is actually the priciest region for private crewed yacht charters. The most expensive charter available is a motor yacht, averaging a whopping $95,144 for one week. The Bahamas and the Seychelles are the other two costliest yacht charter destinations.

And the cheapest yachting location in the study is one of the places you’ll spend the most on a high-end resort stay: Thailand, at $48,317 for the week. The Seychelles and the Virgin Islands are the other two priciest resort destinations, at $60,908 and $51,545 for an eight-person weeklong vacation, respectively.

Surprisingly, the highest-priced private crewed yacht charter and luxury resort in the study have nearly identical weekly totals. Susurros del Corazón, Auberge Collection in Punta De Mita, Mexico, is the most expensive resort, at $108,509 for the week (eight guests); the most expensive yacht is Marea La Nautica in the Bahamas, at $108,000 for the week (eight guests).

The Advertised Price Isn’t the Whole Story

Table comparing additional taxes and fees for a one-week yacht charter vs. resort vacation for eight people.

It’s no secret that taxes and fees are unavoidable when selecting accommodations, but how much do they truly add to the overall cost? Before additional charges, a one-week premium resort stay for eight is actually more expensive per night than a private crewed yacht charter, with the advertised nightly rate averaging $5,295 compared to $5,147.

Though luxury resort sticker prices are 2.8% higher than what you’ll pay each night for a crewed charter, the total weekly cost shifts when factoring in taxes, fees, and VAT/APA (advanced provisioning allowance) expenses. A one-week yacht charter for a group of eight averages $11,434 in additional VAT/APA fees. On the other hand, the average estimated taxes and fees for a one-week luxury resort stay for eight people are roughly half that figure, at $5,692.

Naturally, additional charter and resort expenses vary by destination. Australia, the Bahamas, and Mexico have the highest VAT/APA fees across all regions analyzed; Mexico, the Seychelles, and the Virgin Islands have the highest resort taxes and fees.

Yacht type also plays a significant role in what your group pays in added fees. For sailing yachts, VAT/APA charges account for 20-30% of the overall weekly cost, while motor yachts account for a heftier 30-40%.

Although additional yacht expenses are 67.1% higher than luxury resorts, overall weekly costs are still comparable in the big picture. A group of eight will only pay $86 each per night for a private crewed yacht charter, compared to a high-end resort, and this is after factoring in taxes, fees, and VAT/APA rates. So, don’t let the steep percentages deter you! Chartering a yacht is more achievable than you’d think.

Sources and Methodology

In August 2026, we ran 1,067 yacht charter mock bookings on Boats At Sea and 1,538 luxury resort mock bookings on Virtuoso for two one-week travel windows across 11 international destinations. The destinations selected for this study include popular global hotspots well-known for both yacht and high-end resort travel. The analysis focused on the cost of a one-week vacation for eight adult guests.

All prices represent the advertised rates on Boats At Sea and Virtuoso at the time of data collection. Actual prices are subject to change based on availability, booking dates, room or yacht type, taxes, fees, and other conditions.

Resort Data

We collected luxury resort pricing from the premium travel network Virtuoso. We searched the “Hotel or Resort” category for each destination included in the study and collected the available rates for the following dates: Nov. 1, 2026 – Nov. 8, 2026 and May 23, 2027 and May 30, 2027. Both coastal and inland resorts are featured in this study.

Initial searches were conducted for four adult guests because of the limited ability to book for eight guests at once. Total resort costs for four guests were doubled to represent eight adult guests. This calculation was applied to the total cost, including taxes and fees, rather than simply doubling the advertised nightly rates. We only included resorts with pre-tax/fee subtotals below $80,000 for a group of eight in the final analysis.

We also collected hotel names, locations, individual hotel URLs, available room descriptions, nightly rates, room subtotals, and hotel features. All-inclusive resorts were excluded from the analysis.

Yacht Data

We collected yacht charter pricing from the crewed yacht charter offerings on Boats At Sea. We searched listings for every destination included in the study and collected the available rates for the following dates: Nov. 1, 2026 – Nov. 8, 2026, and May 23, 2027, and May 30, 2027. Searches were for eight adult guests with a maximum advertised weekly price of $80,000.

We collected yacht names, yacht types, length, crew size, summer and winter ports, guest capacity, number of cabins, and amenities. We excluded all-inclusive yachts from the analysis.

For standard crewed charters, we gathered listed low-season (October–May) weekly charter rates and additional expenses, since both our booking windows were in the low season. We combined and applied VAT and APA percentages to weekly charter rates when applicable. If a charter listing did not explicitly state its VAT/APA breakdown, we applied the sailing yacht and motor yacht percentages listed under “Plus Expenses” (30-40% for motor yachts and 20-30% for sailing yachts).
